Check in real time the availability for your Car Hire Naples with Rent.it, yuor low cost car rental.
We compare the cheapest rates for your Car Hire Naples with the major international and the best local car rental companies.

With car hire in Naples, you can explore not only the city, but also Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Caserta, Sorrento and other destinations across Campania at your own pace. On Rent.it, compare the offers available for your travel dates from different rental companies, then choose the collection point, vehicle class and rental conditions that suit your trip.

The daily rate is only one part of the decision. Before booking, check the accepted payment cards, security deposit, cover, excess, mileage policy, fuel policy, and the exact collection and return location. Requirements can vary by rental company, branch, vehicle group and rate.

Good to know: if you are staying entirely in Naples' historic centre, you may not need a car every day. A rental car is particularly useful for accommodation outside the centre and for day trips. Before driving, always check access restrictions for ZTL zones and parking options.

Why rent a car in Naples?

Naples has a dense network of metro, bus and rail services, and many central sights are easy to visit on foot or by public transport. Renting a car makes most sense when your plans extend beyond the city centre and you want to connect several places without relying on timetables.

A car can be especially useful when:

  • your accommodation is outside the historic centre;
  • you plan to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius or Caserta;
  • you are planning several stops around Campania;
  • you are travelling with family, luggage or several passengers;
  • you have business appointments in different locations;
  • you want to return the vehicle at another branch and a suitable one-way rate is available.

For Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno, Naples Cathedral, the National Archaeological Museum and many other central attractions, it is often more practical to park outside restricted areas and continue on foot or by public transport.

Where can I collect a rental car in Naples?

Available branches depend on your dates and current availability. In the search form, compare the precise location as well as the rental rate, and consider how you will reach the branch and where your route begins.

Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP)

Airport collection is convenient if you want to drive on straight after landing or return the car close to the airport before your flight home. For information about rental-car parking, shuttles, flight numbers and late arrivals, see our page on car hire at Naples Airport (NAP).

Naples Central Station and city branches

A city branch can be more convenient if you arrive by train, spend a few days in Naples before collecting the car, or only need it for the second part of your trip. Napoli Centrale is at Piazza Garibaldi and is connected to local public transport.

Always check the full address shown for each offer. Labels such as “Naples”, “Central Station”, or the name of a district do not necessarily mean that the desk is inside the station building or next to your accommodation. Check opening hours, any shuttle or meeting-point instructions, and the return location too.

Collection point Best for Check before booking
Capodichino Airport Arriving by air and continuing your journey straight away Desk or shuttle, flight number, opening hours and return procedure
Central Station / Piazza Garibaldi Arriving by train or leaving the city after a stay Exact address, distance from the station, access and luggage transfer
Other city branches Accommodation or appointments outside the centre Accessibility, opening hours and current availability

How to compare car-rental offers on Rent.it

  1. Select Naples, then choose the collection point that best fits your journey.
  2. Enter collection and return dates and times as accurately as possible.
  3. Compare vehicle class, equipment and luggage capacity.
  4. Check the included cover, excess, deposit, mileage and fuel policy.
  5. If needed, use the filter for the card you will present to the rental company.
  6. Read the conditions of the selected offer in full before completing the booking.

An initially low rate may be less suitable if it comes with a high deposit, limited mileage, an inconvenient fuel policy or paid extras. Compare the complete package, not only the first price you see.

Car rental in Naples without a credit card

With selected offers available at the time of search, it may be possible to collect a car in Naples using a named debit card or a named prepaid card. However, acceptance of a card for online payment does not automatically mean that the same card will be accepted at the rental desk for the deposit or other charges.

In the search results, select the precise card type that the main driver will present at collection. Then check the terms of the individual rate for:

  • the accepted card type and card network;
  • whether the physical card must be presented and carry the cardholder's name;
  • the amount of the deposit and whether it is blocked or charged;
  • whether a particular level of cover is required;
  • any additional documents that may be requested;
  • the age and driving-licence requirements.

Important: the card used at the desk normally has to be issued to the main driver named on the voucher and have sufficient available funds. Virtual, anonymous, or cards issued to a travelling companion may be refused. The conditions of the selected offer always apply.

For a broader explanation of cards, deposits and practical checks, read our guide to car hire in Italy without a credit card.

Documents, deposit and checks at collection

The main driver must present all original documents required by the voucher and the rental conditions. These usually include:

  • a valid original driving licence held for the required minimum period;
  • a valid original identity document or passport;
  • the Rent.it voucher;
  • a card accepted by the rental company and issued in the main driver's name;
  • an international driving permit or translation, where required;
  • any other evidence specified in the rate conditions.

Check the minimum and maximum age, young- or senior-driver surcharges and the required length of licence holding before you travel. Additional drivers must also meet the conditions and present their driving licences.

Inspect the vehicle with the branch representative at collection. Have existing damage recorded on the check-out report, and document the vehicle condition, fuel level and mileage. Keep the rental agreement and the return receipt until the deposit has been released or refunded in full.

Which car is best for a trip to Naples?

Travel plan Suitable vehicle type What matters most
Naples and nearby areas Mini or compact car Easy to handle in city traffic and when looking for parking
Pompeii, Vesuvius and Caserta Compact car or saloon Comfort and enough space for day trips
Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast As compact a vehicle as possible Narrow roads, busy traffic and limited parking
Family or group Estate, people carrier or SUV The actual boot capacity and number of bags

Book child seats, additional drivers, an automatic transmission and other extras in advance whenever possible. Availability at the desk is not guaranteed. A larger car offers more room but can be less practical in the centre and on coastal roads.

Driving in Naples: ZTL zones and parking

Naples has several limited traffic zones (ZTL) and pedestrian areas. Access may be monitored by cameras; opening times and rules vary by zone and can change. Follow local signage and check the City of Naples' current information on ZTL zones and pedestrian areas before driving.

  • Do not rely on navigation alone: a suggested route may lead through a restricted-access area.
  • Ask your accommodation before you arrive whether it is inside a ZTL and whether number-plate registration is available or required.
  • Use official car parks and read the signs and charging rules carefully.
  • Do not leave valuables or visible luggage in the vehicle.
  • Allow enough time for city traffic and finding a parking space.

Day trips from Naples by rental car

Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius

The archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum are among the most important destinations near Naples. A car gives you the flexibility to combine a visit with Mount Vesuvius or other places around the bay. Check opening hours, parking and any booking requirements in advance.

Royal Palace of Caserta

The Royal Palace of Caserta is a worthwhile destination north of Naples. With a rental car, you can combine it with San Leucio or other places nearby without being tied to fixed transport connections.

Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are particularly popular. In high season, traffic, access rules and limited parking can make journeys considerably longer. Before setting out, check current local driving rules and, depending on the time of year, consider combining the car with rail or ferry travel.

Campi Flegrei and Pozzuoli

To the west of Naples lie Pozzuoli and the Phlegraean Fields. A rental car makes it easier to visit several archaeological and scenic sites in this area. Always take account of current local advice and any traffic restrictions.

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Naples

Is a rental car useful in Naples city centre?

For sightseeing in the historic centre, walking and public transport are often more practical. A rental car is most useful for accommodation outside the centre, business appointments and trips around Campania.

Should I collect my car at the airport or in the city?

It depends on your arrival and route. If you arrive by plane and want to continue immediately, Capodichino is often convenient. If you arrive by train or are spending several days in the centre, a later collection at a city branch may work better. Compare availability, address, opening hours and total price.

Can I rent a car in Naples with a debit or prepaid card?

Yes, if the selected rate expressly accepts your card for vehicle collection. Use the card filter and check the cardholder, card network, deposit, cover and any extra requirements in the rate conditions.

Does the card have to be in the main driver's name?

Usually, yes. The cardholder's name, the main driver named on the voucher and the documents presented should match. A card issued to a travelling companion can be refused even if that person is present at collection.

Can I return the car to a different branch?

Some rates allow one-way rentals, possibly with an extra fee. Select a different return location in the search form and check the conditions displayed for the offer.

What should I do if my accommodation is inside a ZTL?

Contact the accommodation before you arrive. Ask about access rules, number-plate registration and recommended parking. A hotel reservation does not automatically permit access to every ZTL.

Should I book my rental car in advance?

Searching early makes it easier to compare vehicle classes, card conditions and collection points. Prices and availability change regularly, especially during holiday periods and for high-demand vehicle groups.
