Winter tyres, all-season tyres and snow chains

Winter tyres are designed for cold-season driving. All-season tyres combine features for summer and winter use: check their markings and suitability for your planned route.

Snow chains are separate equipment. A rate that includes chains does not necessarily include winter tyres. Ask which devices are supplied and how to use them on the vehicle you collect.

When is winter equipment required in Italy?

Italian requirements depend on the orders applying to individual roads. The usual period is 15 November to 15 April, although dates can differ. Applicable rules may require winter tyres or suitable anti-skid devices on board. Check the road operator’s current notices and roadside signs for your route.

Are winter tyres included in the rental price?

Do not assume every rate includes them. Equipment, extra charges and request procedures vary by supplier, vehicle, location and offer. Before paying, check:

• which equipment is included and which items cost extra;
• whether an equipment request needs confirmation from the supplier;
• accepted payment cards, the security deposit, excesses and cover;
• mileage allowances and any cross-border restrictions.

Choosing your pick-up point and vehicle

Search at the airport, railway station or city branch that best suits your arrival plans. Availability of winter-equipped vehicles must be checked for each search; it is not guaranteed at every branch or in every category.

Allow enough room for passengers and luggage, and check arrangements for carrying skis or bulky equipment separately. A ski rack is not automatically included with winter equipment.

Ask the rental desk to confirm the equipment stated in your booking and check that any requested chains are present. Raise any discrepancy before leaving the branch. If you plan to drive outside Italy, confirm the supplier’s permission and check the rules in every country on your itinerary.
