Türkiye

Hiring a car in Turkey, officially Türkiye, gives you the flexibility to connect the Aegean coast, Mediterranean resorts and inland Anatolia around your own plans. On Rent.it, search for cars in Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, Ankara and the other destinations below, then compare the vehicles and supplier terms available for your travel dates.

Where can you search for car hire in Turkey?

Use this regional directory to explore the destinations listed in the Rent.it Turkey catalogue. A catalogue listing does not guarantee a vehicle for every date. The “Search offers” links open the booking engine: enter the named destination, choose the actual pick-up point suggested and check the results for your journey.

Which airport or city pick-up suits your trip?

Which airport or city pick-up suits your trip?

Rent.it’s city pages list the following pick-up points for these four destinations. Use them to understand the options, then check which branch the selected offer actually uses. Airport and city rentals can differ in access arrangements and conditions.

DestinationListed pick-up points
IstanbulIstanbul - City; Istanbul - Airport (IST); Istanbul - Kadıköy; Istanbul - Sabiha Gökçen - Airport (SAW); Istanbul - Taksim; Istanbul Bostancı - City; Istanbul Şişli - City
AntalyaAntalya - Airport (AYT); Antalya - City
IzmirIzmir - Airport (ADB); Izmir - City
AnkaraAnkara - Airport Esenboğa (ESB); Ankara - City

Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side. Match the airport to your flight and onward journey, allowing for Bosphorus crossings where needed. Ankara works as a starting point for central Anatolia, Izmir for the Aegean and Antalya for the Mediterranean coast. For Bodrum, Dalaman, Kayseri and other catalogue destinations, check the precise branch offered by the search instead of assuming collection is in the town centre.

How to compare the full cost of your car hire

Rent.it is a booking broker: it helps you compare offers, while the supplier named in your booking provides the car. Start with your pick-up and return locations, local dates and times, and the driver’s actual details. Check residence, age and display currency rather than leaving an unsuitable default. An English-language search is useful for international visitors, but does not mean that every driver lives in the UK.

Compare the price for the whole rental alongside mileage, fuel policy, deposit, excess and included cover. Check the amount payable when booking, any balance due at collection and mandatory charges. A lower headline price is only useful if its conditions fit your trip. Read cancellation, amendment and no-show terms before confirming.

Select automatic transmission expressly if you need it, and check luggage capacity rather than relying on the number of seats. A pictured model may illustrate a vehicle group; the offer determines which features are guaranteed. Request child seats and additional drivers as needed, and retain your confirmation and voucher.

Payments and arrival times for overseas visitors

The local currency is the Turkish lira. Your search display currency and the currency charged at the counter may differ: check the currency of the balance, deposit and extras as well as your card’s conversion terms. Enter collection and return in local time and allow time for disembarkation and luggage. Entry requirements depend on citizenship and the travel document used, not on the language selected for booking.

Driving licences, travel documents and payment cards

Bring your original valid driving licence, the travel document required for entry, your voucher and the payment card specified by the supplier in the main driver’s name. Border-entry rules and rental requirements are separate. Paying online does not remove the requirement to show an acceptable card at collection.

For UK licence holders, FCDO guidance requires a 1968 international driving permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish; the 1949 permit is not accepted. Drivers with licences from other countries should check their own consular guidance. Supplier requirements for minimum age, licence experience and vehicle group still apply.

Car hire without a credit card is not a countrywide rule. A debit card is an option only where the selected supplier’s conditions explicitly accept it. Check the card network, physical format, name and funds needed for the deposit. Do not assume that prepaid cards, virtual cards or another person’s card are accepted. Resolve any uncertainty before paying.

Understand the deposit, excess and protection

A security deposit is the guarantee required by the supplier under the rental agreement. The excess is the amount you may remain liable for following a covered incident, subject to the terms. Check them separately and allow sufficient available funds or credit for the deposit, rental balance and extras.

Read the scope of included cover and exclusions, including any separate treatment of glass, tyres, underbody, keys and unauthorised use. If you choose additional protection, establish whether it reduces your liability directly with the rental company or reimburses eligible costs later. An excess-reimbursement product does not automatically remove the supplier’s deposit.

Anyone who will drive should be authorised in the agreement. Minimum and maximum ages, young-driver charges, additional-driver fees and requirements for larger vehicles depend on the chosen offer.

Choose a car for your luggage, season and route

A compact car can be practical for a fixed-base holiday with light luggage. For a family trip with several overnight stops, compare usable boot space with every seat occupied. A larger car is not automatically more convenient when you need to park near an older town centre or reach accommodation through narrow streets.

Automatic transmission may make frequent urban driving more comfortable. For inland or mountain travel in winter, confirm suitable tyres and seasonal equipment with the supplier. For summer journeys, check air conditioning in the vehicle details. An SUV does not give permission to drive on tracks or unpaved roads.

If an electric car is offered, consider charging opportunities along your actual route and the required return charge level. Choose around how you will use the vehicle, including passengers, luggage and stops, rather than the daily rate alone.

Driving in Turkey: tolls, parking and route planning

Turkey drives on the right. Follow posted speed limits, use seat belts and arrange appropriate child restraints. Avoid alcohol before driving and do not use a handheld phone. Give yourself extra margin on secondary roads, particularly when visibility or weather deteriorates.

The electronic HGS system is used on toll routes. At collection, ask how the vehicle’s crossings are recorded, how tolls are billed and whether handling charges apply. Do not assume that tolls are included in the rental price or that the final account will be ready as soon as you return the car.

In Istanbul and historic centres, accommodation with parking can simplify your stay. Check pedestrian areas and local access restrictions before driving to the door. You can also compare collecting the car only when you leave the city. Check weather and road conditions for inland and Black Sea journeys, and current official travel advice before planning south-eastern routes.

What speed limits apply?

KGM distinguishes these road categories for passenger cars. Always follow the posted limit, including lower local restrictions.

Road typeGeneral limit
Built-up area50 km/h
Two-way interurban road90 km/h
Divided road110 km/h
KGM motorway130 km/h
YİD concession motorway140 km/h

Build a realistic Turkey road trip

For the Aegean, consider an itinerary centred on Izmir and Çeşme, or use Bodrum as a base with fewer hotel changes. Dalaman and Marmaris provide further catalogue options for the south-west. Denizli Çardak may fit a route extending inland: compare the actual pick-up point with your flights and overnight stops.

For Mediterranean stays, compare Antalya, Alanya and Gazipasa against your accommodation location. For Cappadocia, explore the search options for Kayseri and Tuzkoy and confirm the exact branch. Ankara and Konya can form part of a longer central Anatolian itinerary. A place you visit during the holiday does not necessarily have a Rent.it collection point.

On the Black Sea, plan around the areas of Samsun, Ordu–Giresun, Trabzon and Rize. Around Marmara, consider Istanbul, Bursa and Çanakkale while allowing for metropolitan traffic. Trying to combine the coasts, Cappadocia and the east in a short holiday can mean excessive driving; compare separate rentals linked by domestic flights where suitable.

Collection, return, one-way rentals and ferries

Follow the supplier instructions on your voucher. Airport collection may involve a desk, meeting point or shuttle; it does not always mean an in-terminal branch. Add flight details where requested and contact the specified number if arrival changes. A late flight does not automatically guarantee that the branch will remain open or hold the booking indefinitely.

Check the car, fuel level and equipment at collection and have existing damage recorded. At return, follow the agreed fuel policy and retain receipts and final paperwork. Ask about out-of-hours procedures and when your responsibility for the car ends.

Returning to a different branch is possible only when accepted for the selected offer and may carry a fee. Enter a different return point from the start, including when changing airports within Istanbul. Taking the car abroad or onto a ferry requires the supplier’s permission and may be restricted. Check territorial cover, documents and charges before booking onward travel.

Frequently asked questions about car hire in Turkey

Where can I search for car hire in Turkey on Rent.it?

Search Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, Ankara and the other destinations listed on this page. Actual offers depend on your dates, times, pick-up point and driver details; check the booking engine for availability.

Which Istanbul airport should I select?

Select Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) according to your flight. They are separate airports: check both collection and return points and follow your voucher instructions.

Do UK drivers need an international driving permit?

FCDO guidance requires a 1968 international driving permit or a UK licence notarised in Turkish. The 1949 permit is not accepted. Check supplier requirements too; drivers with other licences should consult the guidance relevant to their issuing country.

Can I hire a car without a credit card?

Only if the chosen offer allows an alternative accepted by the supplier. Check card type, network, physical format, the main driver’s name and the available funds needed for the deposit.

Is the deposit the same as the excess?

No. The deposit secures the rental agreement; the excess is the amount you may be liable for after a covered event under the terms. Check amounts, cover and exclusions separately.

How are HGS tolls paid for a rental car?

Ask the supplier how it manages the vehicle’s toll transactions and bills them, including any administration fees. Do not assume tolls are included or that the final calculation happens at return.

Can I collect in one city and return in another?

Yes, if the selected offer accepts both locations. Enter both in your search and check any one-way charge, opening hours and instructions for each branch.

Can I take the rental car abroad or onto a ferry?

Only with permission under the supplier’s terms. Check territorial restrictions, cover, documents and charges first. An open border or operating ferry route does not establish permission to take the car.
