Sibiu is an important city in Romania, with about 150,000 inhabitants. Located in the historical region of Transylvania, it is the capital of the Sibiu district and it is located about 280 kilometers from the capital Bucharest. The city was founded in 1190 by Geza II, king of Hungary, and by the 16th century Sibiu had become one of the most important trade centers in the area. Sibiu holds several records among the cities of Romania: at the end of 1200 the first hospital was opened here; in 1380 the first school; in 1588 the first book was printed here and in 1788 the first theater was opened. The Brukenthal national museum is the oldest in Romania (1817) and the most prestigious in the entire nation.
A city with a strong industrial vocation, in Sibiu operates industries in the sectors of mechanics, textiles, electrical engineering and agribusiness. The city is at the center of major European (E68, E81) and national (highways DN1, DN7, DN14) road junctions and is served by the Sibiu International Airport (SNZ).
At the urban level, Sibiu is divided into two zones: the upper town (Orasul de sus) and the lower town (Orasul de jos). In the lower, more modern city, two towers remain, remnants of the ancient fortifications. The upper town is instead the historical part of the city and develops around the three main squares: Grand Square, Lesser Square and Huet Square. In the Grand Square there is the Brukenthal museum, one of the most important in Romania; the Blue House, from the 18th century; the Jesuit church; the mayor's offices, located in an art nouveau building; the council tower, symbol of the city. In the Lesser Square there are the houses that belonged to the ancient guilds, including the luxembourg house, in baroque style. Finally, in the Huet square there is the majestic 14th century evangelical cathedral.
