Constanța is a city in Romania with about 300,000 inhabitants. Located on the western shores of the Black Sea, it is famous for its thermal baths and its beaches that attract a large number of tourists every year. Near Constanța there is Mamaia, one of the main and oldest seaside resorts in Romania.
Of ancient foundation (it dates back to the Persian Empire), the city - which at the time was called Tomis - was later annexed to the Roman Empire. The famous poet Ovid was exiled there in the last years of his life. The city remembers him with a square (Piaţa Ovidiu) and a statue. The city was later called by its present name in honour of Constantia, the half-sister of Emperor Constantine.
