Begin your exciting Sicilian road trip with a stop in Taormina

Taormina is a quaint Italian town located on the east coast of the Mediterranean’s largest island, Sicily. The plethora of great attractions and activities on offer in the region, in addition to the mild climate, pristine beaches and captivating historical sites, have made it one of the most visited tourist destinations on the island. The vista surrounding the settlement is also absolutely stunning: to the east you are provided with unbeatable views of the Mediterranean Sea; whilst in the south, the peak of Mt Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, towers majestically in the distance.

The most popular attraction in Taormina, if not the whole of Sicily, is indisputably the ancient Greek Theatre “Teatro Greco”, which dates back to the seventh century BC, although remodelling in the second century AD greatly altered the structure. The theatre is not only admired for its architectural and historical value however, as it is currently still in use, with numerous concerts, festivals and events held there every year.

Another ancient gem located directly in the heart of Taormina is the Piazza del Duomo Cathedral, which was built in the 13th century and has an interesting fortress-like quality, thanks in part to its battlement like façade. The Cathedral is also located at one end of the “Corso Umberto”, the town’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, meaning that you may also like to do a little shopping, enjoy some of the local cuisine, do a little people watching, or wonder through the town and take in the stunning mix of Gothic, Norman and Arab architecture.

Although there are a magnitude of things to see and do in Taormina itself, Sicily has so much more to offer for those that are willing to get out there and explore, such as the Mt Etna National Park, the Valley of the Temples and the Zingaro Nature Reserve, in addition to a plethora of great wineries and museums, which lie dotted around the island.

The best way to really discover the region is consequently to hire a car and plan a road trip, which can be effortlessly organised through a reputable car hire company such as rent.it. Rent.it is fantastic, as it allows you the freedom to pick your chosen rental vehicle up from various different locations on the island, including Catania Railway Station, Messina City and Palermo airport. Dropping your transportation off is just as convenient, and as an added bonus, the money you save on your car hire can be put to good use in the airport’s duty-free shopping section before you leave!
