Firenze, or Florence, is an Italian city in Tuscany, and capital of the region. Filled with history, the city dates back to Roman times, and is famous for its many churches, cathedrals and museums. Firenze was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Firenze’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR) lies four kilometers west of Firenze in the town of Peretola. An advance booking with Rent.it will ensure a high quality car is waiting for you to collect at the airport and drive into the city to explore the breathtaking art, culture and history that draws over a million visitors to Firenze every year.
At the centre of Firenze lies the Piazza della Signoria, a beautiful square filled with statues. A copy of Michelangelo’s David stands in front of the medieval town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio. The original statue can be seen in the Galleria dell’ Academia, one of Firenze’s many museums. The largest is the Uffizi Gallery, which houses thousands of works of art by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, among others. Another major attraction is the Duomo, a huge Gothic cathedral made from pink, white and green marble and topped with a massive dome. The bell-tower was designed by Giotto, and stairs can be climbed to the top of the Campanile to give wonderful views over the city and its surroundings. A walk across the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge lined with shops, takes you to Boboli Gardens, a hillside covered with trees, gardens and fountains, and the Pitti Palace, home of the Medici dynasty.
Firenze is beautiful to visit, but to see it from a distance is also magical. For spectacular views, drive your rental car up into the hills above Firenze in order to look down over the city. In this area are some pretty towns that are worth a visit; drive to Fiesole, about five miles north of Firenze, which has Etruscan and Longabard ruins, a restored Roman ampitheatre and baths, and an 11th century cathedral with many lovely frescoes. Close to Fiesole is Monte Ceceri, where the quarries that produced the famous gray stone used in Tuscan architecture can be seen. A little further away, 60 kilometers to the south, lies the medieval Tuscan hill town of Sienna. Here you can climb the 505 steps to the top of its medieval bell tower, or relax in the beautiful fan-shaped piazza.
