Venice is a city with over 250,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Veneto region. It is located in the Venetian lagoon and is about thirty kilometers from Treviso and Padua. It is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It seems that Venice was born following the flight of refugees who were fleeing from the Po valley after the Longobard invasion in 568. The city, immediately very independent, became one of the Maritime Republics, along with Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi. The head of the government was the Doge (from the Latin dux), elected for life, but who could be forced to resign if the results of his government turned out to be unsatisfactory.
Interesting things to see in Venice
The current city of Venice in the lagoon is divided into the six districts of Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Polo, San Marco, Cannaregio and Castello and is spread over 118 small islands connected by 354 bridges and divided by 177 between canals and canals. The center of the city is Piazza San Marco, where the homonymous basilica, the Ducal Palace and the historic bell tower are located. Another symbol of the city is the Rialto Bridge.
There are two roads to reach the historic center of Venice: Strada Nova and Strada Vecia. The Strada Nova, starts from Piazzale Roma and arrives at Piazza San Marco. The shorter Vecia Road is very tortuous. Other important Venetian monuments are the synagogues of the Ghetto, the basilica of Santa Maria gloriosa dei Frari, the church of Santa Maria della Salute, the Arsenale.
The main canals of the city are the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal. From Venice you can easily reach the islands of Murano and Burano by ferry: Burano immediately catches the eye with its brightly colored houses, and is famous for the production of its typical embroidered lace. Murano is perhaps the most famous island of Venice, where glass is worked in an artistic way.
