Bilbao is the largest city in the País Vasco, the northern part of Spain. It counts almost 400,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the province of Biscay. The city was founded on the banks of the Nervion River in 1300 by an act of the then lord of Biscay, Don Diego Lopez de Haro.

The city is rich in monuments and buildings whose architecture ranges from Gothic to contemporary. Notables are, for example, the Cathedral of St. James or St. Anton church. Along the Nervion River there are 17 bridges of which notable are the Zubizuri, designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 1997, and the bridge La Salve, opened in 1972 and redesigned by French conceptual artist Daniel Buren in 2007. There are also numerous parks which are located in Bilbao.
