Iași, a Romanian city of over 300,000 inhabitants, is the second largest municipality in the country after Bucharest. The city is the capital of the Iași district and of the historical region of Romanian Moldova. It is located in the north-east of the country, near the Balhui river, and it is built on a series of nine hills that bring it up to 400 meters above sea level. Given its continental position, Iași has very cold winters and equally hot summers.
Archaeological findings suggest that the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Sparse settlements existed as early as the sixth century, which eventually developed into the present city. Around 1500 Iași was the capital of the rumenian Moldova and over the centuries it faced various destructions and calamities.
